But once the NEET preparation journey begins, another important question comes up: Which medical colleges should a student aim for?
India has hundreds of medical colleges offering MBBS. The National Medical Commission's current database lists 847 institutions teaching MBBS with 1,39,213 MBBS seats across India.
AIIMS Delhi is one of the most prominent names, but it is certainly not the only medical institution students should know about. A good aspirant should research the entire ecosystem.
AIIMS Delhi & Other Leading Medical Institutions (NIRF 2025)
Established in 1956, AIIMS New Delhi remains India's premier medical institution, ranked No. 1 in the NIRF 2025 Medical rankings. Its reputation rests on exceptional hospital infrastructure, massive patient exposure, and cutting-edge research.
However, several other established government and university institutions offer world-class medical training:
- PGIMER Chandigarh (NIRF Rank 2) — National medical powerhouse renowned for advanced medical education and clinical research.
- Christian Medical College (CMC), Vellore (NIRF Rank 3) — Decades-long heritage of ethical clinical training and community healthcare.
- JIPMER Puducherry (NIRF Rank 4) — Institute of National Importance with autonomous academic standards and modern hospital facilities.
- SGPGIMS Lucknow (NIRF Rank 5) — Uttar Pradesh's leading postgraduate and tertiary healthcare research institute.
- Banaras Hindu University (BHU), Varanasi (NIRF Rank 6) — Institute of Medical Sciences with vast multi-specialty clinical infrastructure.
- King George's Medical University (KGMU), Lucknow (NIRF Rank 8) — One of North India's oldest and most prestigious clinical teaching hospitals.
What About AIIMS Colleges Outside Delhi?
One common misconception among students is that AIIMS means only AIIMS Delhi. That is not the case. The Government of India has established multiple state-of-the-art AIIMS institutions across the country.

How Should NEET Aspirants Plan Their College Preferences?
My advice to students and parents is simple: Don't create a list of only one or two colleges. Create a broad, realistic preference list based on key clinical parameters:
- 1. Total Fee Structure (Government vs. Private/Deemed)
- 2. Clinical Exposure & Inpatient Bed Occupancy Rate
- 3. Academic Pedagogy & Faculty Stability
- 4. Campus & Hostel Infrastructure
- 5. Geographic Location & State Quota Eligibility
- 6. Internship Culture & Post-MBBS PG Guidance
